Restoring the Statue of Liberty : sculpture, structure, symbol
Lee Iacocca’s leadership of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation was crucial for funding the restoration work, but it was a large team of architects and engineers who ensured that the project was successful. This book, written by the managing partner of the architectural firm Swanke Hayden Connell, charts the restoration project from its beginning in 1982 through the detailed engineering decisions that were made to modernize the landmark without altering its historic character. Of particular interest is the extensive historical research that was conducted to understand how the statue was originally constructed and why certain design decisions were made. The development in technology and engineering techniques in the 100 years between the statue’s construction and restoration is remarkable.
