[Photogravure] Declaration of Independence, July 4 1776

Originally painted between 1817 and 1819 for the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, John Trumbull’s monumental canvas was widely circulated through engravings. This photogravure was made after Asher B. Durand’s 1823 steel engraving of the painting. Produced by the Photogravure & Color Co., New York, this example likely dates from the late 19th century or early 20th century. Special Collections holds several versions of this image.
