Observations pour servir de réponse aux diférens faits avancés par les prétendus Amis des noirs
Published the year before the start of the Haitian Revolution, this pro-slavery work is attributed collectively to ship captains operating out of the French port of Le Havre and sailing around the coast of Africa. The pamphlet specifically addresses an abolitionist publication printed by the Société des amis des Noirs, or the Society of the Friends of the Blacks. This group was founded just prior to the French Revolution by Jacques Pierre Brissot, who was greatly influenced by British and American abolitionists. In the pamphlet, the ship captains try to minimize the human suffering inherent to the practice of slavery and instead focus on the economic benefit of the slave trade.
