Calypso Canoe Club Sports - July 4, 1908

To celebrate the July 4th holiday in the 19th and early 20th centuries, residents of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania picnicked and boated around Calypso Island in the Lehigh River. These real photo postcards capture the Calypso Canoe Club rowing around the river on the fourth of July in 1908. Calypso Island was acquired by the Lehigh Valley Railroad in the early 1900s and was eventually demolished to improve the rail route through Bethlehem.
