The Brown and White
The Brown and White, a student-run newspaper founded in 1894, has reported on various social movements through the years. Examining its archives is a useful tool to gauge the political climate on campus through the decades. During the feminist fight for women’s suffrage, a lecture was given in 1911 in support of women’s right to vote. However, in 1949, a politician spoke to a crowd about repealing the 20th amendment. This shows how both sides of any given issue have been present at Lehigh. During the anti-war movement, teach-ins about the Vietnam War were hosted by professors; at the height of the gay rights movement, a lecture was given on the progress of gay rights. The Brown and White has also reported on movements within Bethlehem, including when the Occupy movement came to Southside.
