Pastoral que el ilustrisimo señor dôr. D. Manuel Ignacio Gonzalez del Campillo dignisimo obispo de la Puebla de los Angeles dirige a sus diocesanos
The Mexican War of Independence began in September 1810 with an uprising led by the Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the town of Dolores. This revolt against the Spanish colonial system, led by King Ferdinand VII, quickly gathered support, with tens of thousands of people joining Hidalgo’s army. This initial revolt was ultimately defeated, but the fight for independence would last for another 11 years until the Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire was written in 1821. The 1810 pamphlet displayed here is critical of Hidalgo’s uprising, urging the Mexican people to avoid violence and have respect for Europeans, who the author claims brought civilization and Christian faith to the Americas.
