-Women at Play

While it is easy to focus on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League to understand women playing the sport, Gregorich takes a more expansive view. As early as 1866, students at women’s colleges such as Vassar, Smith, and Wellesley organized baseball clubs. These amateur teams were followed by the Bloomer Girls of the 1890s through the 1920s, so called because of their style of clothes. Gregorich focuses the bulk her work to highlighting the stories of individual women across the Bloomer, AAGPBL, and modern eras. This modern era is marked by efforts to field an all women and gender integrated minor league team, to promote female umpires, and the struggle to integrate college baseball.
