Inspired by a reunion of AAGPBL players in the 1980s, Browne narrativizes the story of the women’s league by drawing on the experiences of former players. These personal accounts paint a picture of what life was like for the players, both on and off of the field. Traveling between the small midwest cities in which the teams were based, the women of the AAGPBL struggled to balance their love of the game and the societal expectations placed on them, including male chaperones and lessons on proper feminine behavior. Browne closes her book by following up with former players and describing their lives over the years since AAGPBL ended.
