-Pride of the Yankees

Known as the Iron Horse for his toughness and seeming invincibility, Lou Gehrig played for the New York Yankees from 1923 until 1939.  In 1939, Gehrig was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which became known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Pride of the Yankees, a biopic of Gehrig’s life from his youth to his retirement from baseball, premiered in 1942. Several of Gehrig’s Yankee teammates, including Babe Ruth, make appearances in the film. Over 75 years after he retired from baseball, we still honor Lou Gehrig for the character traits celebrated in The Pride of the Yankees: his courage, integrity, and tremendous skill at the game.
