Published in 1925, Playing the Game: From Mine Boy to Manager is the autobiography of player/manager Bucky Harris. Harris led the Washington Senators to a World Series Championship in 1924. In many ways, Harris’s life is a familiar story of the American dream. Harris left school at the age of thirteen to work at a colliery. With the support of his family, Bucky trained hard to be able to follow his brother into professional baseball. The preface by Clark Griffith, owner of the Washington Senators at the time of their World Series win, sets the tone of the autobiography as an instructional example for American boys to work hard and play fair in order to achieve success.
