-A League of Their Own
Directed and produced by Penny Marshall, A League of Their Own is based upon the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), which was founded to maintain fan interest in baseball while male players were away fighting in World War II. Although the real AAGPBL was successful from its inception, in the film, the league struggles at first until the famous “dirt in the skirt” scene in which catcher Geena Davis fields an out while sliding into a split at home plate. This scene epitomizes the additional pressure women face to be beautiful while being skilled athletes, an expectation not placed upon their male counterparts. A story of female friendship and the bonds of sisterhood, A League of their Own is a unique baseball movie that speaks directly to women and their love of the game.
