Paris in the Twentieth Century
Best known for his widely acclaimed novels Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days, and Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, prolific author Jules Verne wrote Paris in the Twentieth Century in 1863 when it was considered to be too radical for publication. Set in Paris in the 1960s, Verne’s manuscript included descriptions of technological advancements well ahead of their time: gas-powered automobiles, skyscrapers, and the ability to send calculations across space and time via networked communications devices.
The original manuscript was rediscovered by one of Verne’s descendants in a safe in 1989. It was translated and first published in its present form in 1994.
