Tik-Tok of Oz

L. Frank Baum was a prolific American author best known for the children’s novel, The Wizard of Oz, a best-seller published in 1900. In all, Baum wrote over a dozen additional Oz stories and a number of other authors continued the series. In addition to writing novels and poems, Baum was active in the theater.

Tik-Tok, an entirely mechanical clockwork humanoid created by Baum, is often described as one of the first robots to appear in literature. This novel introduces Ann Soforth, Queen of Oogaboo, whom Tik-Tok, the clockwork man, assists in conquering the Nome King. Tik-Tok made his first appearance in Ozma of Oz; A Record of Her Adventures with Dorothy Gale of Kansas, the Yellow Hen, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, Tiktok, the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger. It was illustrated by John R. Neill and published in 1907. Tik-Tok of Oz was first published in 1914.
