Frank Kelly Freas

One of the major postwar fan-artists, Frank Kelly Freas also enjoyed professional success as an illustrator, with his work appearing in Astounding Science Fiction and Mad Magazine. In this illustration, included in a 1957 portfolio of Freas’s art, a mouse is depicted untying a fasci, a symbol of ancient Roman authority and, later, a symbol of Italian fascism.
