The Great Israeli Science Fiction Novel

In this article, Israeli-American journalist Sheldon Teitelbaum discusses science-fiction in Israel in a review of William Heinemann’s 1959 novel Level Seven. Teitelbaum quotes the following passage from the novel:

“Am I capable, or incapable of pitying other people. Am I, or ami not able to develop a genuine friendship, to love somebody, to care for another person with all my heart? … I do not want to be a monster, and a man without emotions is a monster. What is the difference between me and an electronic brain? It can calculate better, work more efficiently, it makes no mistakes …”
