Syndrome

After publishing the last issue of the BeABohema in February 1972, Frank Lunney published the first issue of the Syndrome in June 1972 while a Lehigh student and worked at the Free Press of Quakertown during summer break. Lunney says that he prepared the first of a “Brand New Fanzine” months ago, but it took him so long to make it happen due to not finding enough enthusiasm.

[A father] is reading a publication named “Comics” and saying “No!” to his child who wants to play together – a stereotypical excuse by an adult fan, perhaps comparable to 2020s social media-obsessed “busy” parents.

Dan Steffan. “No!” Syndrome, No.3, 1973. Quakertown (Pa.).

This cover art cartoon compares fanzine making to fermenting grapes… “fanzine is like fermenting grapes…”
