Science Fiction: A Visual Encyclopedia
Essential to our previous exhibit, “Galaxy of Ideas: The Robert Lichtman Science Fiction Fanzine Collection”, this visual reference book documents the literary and recording history of the popular science fiction genre. Reference books like this help provide a detailed background of how the genre got its start in the 19th century and developed into a cultural force in the 20th century. Over this timespan, the sci-fi fan community has evolved its own unique sub-culture, which can often be difficult to access without the historical context provided by reference works. Published in 1995, this book misses out on the explosion of sci-fi culture that occurred in the last 30 years, including chart topping film franchises, critically acclaimed television series, and award-winning books.
