Pandemic of Plague
One of the most important functions of a government is maintaining public health. This can take many forms, including funding medical research, promoting vaccinations against infectious diseases, or ensuring clean air and drinking water. While the COVID-19 pandemic is still fresh in our memory, U.S. government response to widespread illness dates back hundreds of years. On display is a 1908 public health bulletin reporting on an outbreak of the bubonic plague that had begun in 1894. This document traces the outbreak of the disease in the Yunnan Province of China and its spread across every continent but Antarctica.
