Life on the Mississippi
Life on the Mississippi is Twain’s love letter to his beloved Mississippi River. From his youth spent on its banks in Hannibal, Missouri to his time training to be a riverboat pilot to his final journey up the Mississippi as a famous author, Twain’s love of the river and its associated way of life is evident on every page.
This issue contains an image on page 441 of the author’s head engulfed in flames with an urn bearing the initials “M.T.” in the foreground. It was said to have been removed from later copies of the first edition in response to protests by Mrs. Clemens.
