The Modern Railroad
Hungerford was an American journalist and author with an interest in railroads and a speciality in organizing railroad exhibitions. He worked for the Brooklyn Eagle, New York Sun, New York Herald, Harper’s Magazine among many popular venues of the day. He indicated publicly that he traveled annually 75,000 miles by railroad. In his book The Modern Railroad he states that for him “the railroad is life itself.” The book contains much information about the intricacies of railroads and their operation including the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Pullman cars and Pennsylvania tunnels. It is abundantly illustrated with photographs. Because the book is considered culturally important, it is currently available on-line and in paperback, however, here is displayed the first edition of this popular book.
