Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York for the Years 1843 & 4
The spine of this little book reads “Manual of the Common Council of N-York 1843 & 4.” This manual is the third version of the publication. It provides both contemporary information about New York City, as well as a historical record and map of New York dated 1695. It also includes the names of individuals appointed to various positions by the Common Council as of November 1843. From 1842 to 1866, Valentine was a Clerk of the Common Council of the southern district of New York. In the following century H. C. Brown used the Valentine name in his publication Valentine’s Manual of Old New York, an almanac and gazette featuring historical vignettes. An example of this later work is on display in the Café Gallery.
