Voyages du baron de La Hontan dans l'Amerique Septentrionale, qui contiennent une rélation des differens peuples qui y habitent; la nature de leur gouvernement; leur commerce, leurs coûtumes, leur religion; & leur maniére de faire la guerre.

In this travelog, Baron de Lahontan recounts his time serving in the French military in Canada and what is today Wisconsin and Minnesota. De Lahontan spent nine years fighting the Iroquois and English and exploring the area. After a disagreement with Governor de Brouillan of the Placentia territory of New France, de Lahontan deserted the French military and left for Europe. It was during this time traveling through Europe that de Lahontan wrote and published his memoirs from 1702 to 1703, a later edition of which is on display here. His memoirs were a popular success, containing details of the local environment and native inhabitants. However, much of his stories are now thought to be fictionalized, including his journey on “la rivière Longue”, supposed to be the Missouri River, and his philosophical conversations with the Huron Chief Adario, or Kondiaronk.
