This 1571 edition of Ortelius’s “Theater of the World” contains maps with oval-like projections.

The third image is a hemispheric map of the Americas. It appears to depict New Guinea as part of Antarctica, plus Terra Del Fuego looks as if it is part of Antarctica (or just about!).

A copy of the French edition (1587) of Ortelius’s work is on display in the Grand Reading Room on the first floor.
