Voyages de M. le marquis de Chastellux dans l'Amérique septentrionale dans les années 1780, 1781 & 1782

Chastellux first came to America in 1780, serving on the staff of the French General Rochambeau fighting against the British in the American Revolution. In this role, Chastellux worked closely with George Washington, forming a long-lasting friendship. This work is written as a daily journal of Chastellux’s participation in the Revolutionary war and his travels around the new nation, including visits to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Chastellux was already an author of note in France before his travels to America, writing an essay On Public Happiness and contributing to Diderot’s Encyclopédie before being elected to the Académie française in 1775.
