First created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1966, Black Panther was the first mainstream African or black superhero. The identity of the Black Panther is T’Challa, who is the king of the imaginary African nation of Wakanda, the most technologically advanced nation on Earth. Wakanda is located in East Africa near Uganda and Kenya. In 2016, Marvel Comics published a new Black Panther series written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is best known for his 2015 National Book Award winning work Between the World and Me. Black Panther gained a boost in popularity following Ryan Coogler’s 2018 film adaptation starring the late Chadwick Boseman.
