This work, with authorship attributed to the main character, tells of a shipwreck in the south Atlantic and the subsequent discovery of the island of Nimpatan. The book focuses on detailing the culture and lifestyle of the island’s inhabitants. The society of Nimpatan is obsessed with gold, which the people worship as god, and are self-interested to the exclusion of any virtuous behavior. Those who defy societal norms, like artists and philanthropists, are confined to asylums. It is eventually revealed that the people of Nimpatan are actually invaders and that the native population is simple and agrarian, using gold to make tools. There is little scholarly commentary about this work, but its negative portrayal of Nimpatan seems to be a critique of 18th century English society.
