An adventure story of courtly intrigue and romance, Prisoner of Zenda is set in the imaginary European kingdom of Ruritania. Zenda is a small town in Ruritania where the abducted king of the country is being held in a castle. The story revolves around an English visitor to Ruritania impersonating the king in order to preserve his rule. The book was adapted into a popular movie in 1937. The novel inspired many other works and gave rise to the Ruritanian romance genre. The term “Ruritania” has also become a general allusion to political scheming.
