A foundational work of horror that popularized the modern idea of vampires, Bram Stoker’s Dracula drew on the legacy of Gothic novels. An epistolary, the story of Dracula’s journey from his home in Transylvania to his haunting of England is told through multiple perspectives in the forms of letters, newspaper articles, and diary entries. While locales mentioned in the novel like Transylvania and Whitby Abbey are real, Stoker imagined Dracula’s Castlein the Carpathian Mountains. Like many other Gothic novels, Dracula’s Castle is haunted by the supernatural as described by the horrified Jonathan Harker. The story and character of Dracula has grown far beyond Stoker's original work, becoming a staple of popular culture. The version of Dracula portrayed by Bela Lugosi in the 1931 film adaptation has come to define the character.
