Dictionnaire de Trévoux

First published in 1704, the Dictionnaire de Trévoux is a French-Latin dictionary closely associated with the Jesuit order. In addition to short definitions, this work also featured longer essays and articles on diverse subjects including science and literature. In creating the Encyclopédie, Diderot used material from the Dictionnaire de Trévoux without substantial attribution. This lack of citation resulted in repeated criticism on the grounds of plagiarism published in the Journal de Trévoux, a monthly periodical reviewing of scientific books written primarily by Jesuits. On display is the final edition of the Dictionnaire de Trévoux, which was published in 1771.
