The authorship of this bird guide, containing 19 hand-colored plates, is uncertain. Although it is attributed to Joseph Franz von Jacquin (1766-1839), it is far more likely that his father, Nikolaus Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin (1727-1817) authored this work on birds of the West Indies. The elder Jacquin was a Dutch scientist who studied medicine, chemistry and botany, and traveled to the West Indies seeking natural history specimens in the 1750s.
