Medical Lexicon

Robley Dunglison enjoyed a successful medical career, acting as a personal physician for American presidents and leading one of the largest medical schools in America. While he is not known for any discoveries or scientific advancements, his medical publications became standards in medical education. Dunglison published the first edition of this dictionary in 1833 after leaving England to become the University of Virginia’s first professor of medicine. This edition was published while Dunglison was Professor of the institutes of medicine and of medical jurisprudence at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. The dictionary sold over fifty-thousand copies over various editions, and was significant for introducing French medical terms into American medical parlance.
