Dante

Oliphant further demonstrates her talent for detailed historical writing in her biography of Dante Alighieri. She offers an account of the author’s life and an examination of his major works, including La Vita Nuova and The Divine Comedy. Oliphant explains background information for each text, including how, why, and where Dante wrote each of them, and offers her own careful literary analysis. Oliphant often wrote in this hybrid biography/criticism mode, as seen in her book on Cervantes. She also completed texts regarding other, less literary historical figures, including Francis of Assisi. Like The Makers of Venice, Dante and related works reflected Oliphant’s deep interest in and knowledge of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
