-Hand Fan

This foldable hand fan, made of black ostrich feathers and tortoise shell, once belonged to Lucy Packer Linderman, the daughter of Lehigh’s founder Asa Packer, and the namesake of Linderman Library. Such a luxurious fashion accessory would have been normal for Lucy, as Asa Packer was among the wealthiest Americans in the mid-to-late 19th century. In addition to its provenance, this item is useful for documenting fashions of the 19th century as well as issues of sustainability, based on the materials used in its construction. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. Arthur Frick.
