Spelling Books

The Connecticut-born schoolteacher Noah Webster (1758-1843) published the first America-authored spelling book in 1783. Thanks in part to Webster’s excellent marketing skills, the American Spelling-Book quickly became a best-seller. By 1818, over three million copies had been sold. Because of the book’s colorful cover, it came to be known as “the blue-backed speller.”
