Cambridge Nov. 8. 1838.

Dear Sir,

I have had the honor of receiving

your letter of Oct. 25. with the request of

the Board of Directors of the Portsmouth

Lyceum. But as I could not, without much

inconvenience to myself, accept their invitation

to lecture. I beg you to present to them

my thanks for the honor they have done

me, and say that I respectfully decline.

Yours [undecipherable]

Henry W. Longfellow

John J. Hayes. Esq.
